WRITING COACH

Woman writng on laptop

The writing life can be joyful, allowing us to daydream and brainstorm and invent new worlds. Free to express ourselves and let our imaginations run wild.

But creative struggles can also bring up our deepest vulnerabilities. As a screenwriter, I have personal experience with the highs and lows of the writing life—the complex struggles, slings and arrows, and fickle business forces.

Struggling with loneliness, frequent rejection, the painfully slow nature of the craft and business. Writer’s block, deadline looming, self-worth plummeting. I’ve been there.

With a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia and a decade of clinical experience, I work with issues related to the writing process, the project itself, and those arising in your personal life.

I Can Help With:

BRITISH COLUMBIA FILM AND ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

Film and television production involves unique pressures and working conditions. My practice is dedicated to providing a safe place for film workers to talk about their mental health.

These are tough times in the film and television business. Recent strikes and the subsequent downturn have created widespread financial pressures and a worsening mental health crisis for actors, crew, and creators. The results of recent surveys are deeply concerning:

BC FILMMAKERS SET PROTECT SURVEY (2022)

A survey of 250+ BC Commercial and non-union film workers found that:

  • Over 75% felt that their mental health was negatively impacted by their jobs and that shorter work days would help.

  • There were high rates of substance abuse to cope with high pressure work conditions.

  • 61% wanted more access to mental health services.

DOCUMENTARY ORG OF CANADA (2023)

Qualitative research based on diverse focus groups revealed:

  • Constant financial uncertainty, development without pay, biased funding opportunities, and low opportunities for distribution.

  • Isolation, depression, hopelessness.

  • Vicarious trauma and PTSD resulting from challenging subject matter.

  • Stress showing up as health conditions.

THE FILM AND TV CHARITY (UK, 2024)

Recent surveys of film, tv and cinema workers (4000+) reveal:

  • 35% described their mental health as poor or very poor.

  • Only 12% consider the industry a mentally healthy place to work.

  • 64% had considered leaving the business due to its negative impact on mental health.

  • 30% experienced suicidal thoughts in the past year.
